BladeStopTM
An Operator Aid to Reduce the Risk of Serious Injury
Benefits
- Reduces the risk of serious injury
- Increases processing uptime
- Improves personnel morale
- Is simple to operate
Background
Industry reports show that bandsaws within the Australian red meat industry cause significant OH&S injuries each year. Up to now, there has been no solution to prevent amputations on bandsaws within the meat processing sector.
BladeStop, in conjunction with Meat and Livestock Australia, has developed a technology that can be built into new bandsaws to reduce the risk of injury.
BladeStopTM
BladeStopTM consists of 3 main components - the unique blade brake mechanism, the operator arm band 'sensor' attachment and a microcontroller based control unit.
Operation
- Operator puts on regular, non conductive gloves
- Operator attaches the arm band enabling the saw to start
- Saw is started via BladeStopTM start button
- Blade is stopped within 15 milliseconds from when it senses a person's hand
The blade is clamped mechanically when the control unit determines that a person has come in contact with the blade. The mechanism mounted in the cabinet, clamps the blade mechanically and grips it above the cut to stop further travel. This occurs within 15 milliseconds from the time that the person touched the blade.
