Background
Industry reports show that bandsaws within the NSW red meat industry cause significant OH&S injuries each year. Up to now, there has been NO solution to prevent amputations on bandsaws within the NSW meat processing sector.
BladeStop, in conjunction with Meat and Livestock Australia, has developed a technology that can be retrofitted to existing bandsaws to reduce the risk of injury.
BladeStopTM
BladeStopT consists of 3 main components - the unique blade brake mechanism, the operator arm 'sensor' attachment and a microcontroller based control unit.
Operation
- Operator puts on regular, non conductive gloves
- Operator attaches the arm band enabling the saw to start
- Saw is started via BladeStopT start button
- Blade is stopped within 10 milliseconds from when it senses a person's hand
The blade is cut mechanically when the control unit determines that a person has come in contact with the blade. The mechanism mounted in the cabinet, shears the blade mechanically and grips above the cut to stop further travel. This occurs within 10 milliseconds from the time that the person touched the blade.
